Trump tours Boeing planes to highlight delay in getting new Air Force One

The White House reported that President Donald Trump visited a Boeing aircraft on Saturday in order to highlight the delays in delivering a new Air Force One.

The President negotiated with Boeing to purchase two new 747-8 aircraft between 2017 and 2021, but now the planes have fallen years behind schedule.

Boeing had originally planned to deliver the two aircraft in December 2024, but has now delayed delivery.

Push the arrival

Trump will be in office until 2027 or 2028, at the latest.

"President Trump is touring a new Boeing plane to checkout the new hardware/technology," White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said. This highlights the failure of the project to deliver a brand new Air Force One as promised.

According to two aviation websites, the aircraft that the president visited on the Palm Beach International Airport was a 12-year old plane that used to belong the Qatari royal family. It is now operated by an Isle of Man-based company.

It wasn't immediately clear whether Trump's plane tour on Saturday was coordinated with Boeing.

Boeing did not comment immediately on Trump's trip and sent questions about delays to the Air Force One Program.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg stated last month that the company would be meeting with Trump's SpaceX competitor Elon Musk to update the plane faster, despite Musk's SpaceX competition with Boeing's space division.

Ortberg, speaking to CNBC on January 28, said: "The President wants the planes sooner. We're working with Elon in order to bring up the schedule for those programs."

Boeing's leaders said that the production was slowed down by issues with the supply chain, high costs, and the complexity of planes intended to be a White House in the air.

In 2016, Trump criticized the price of the new Air Force One planes and demanded the then-Boeing CEO sign a contract for no more than four billion dollars for two aircraft.

Boeing has since said that the contract price was too low, given the fact that the planes were equipped with military avionics and advanced communications as well as a self-defense systems to handle worst-case scenarios.

Trump proposed that the new Air Force One aircraft be painted a dark-red color. However, former president Joe Biden changed the plans to look more like the current model of light blue.

The red-lined design of the Air Force One miniature model that topped Trump's Inauguration Cake on January 20, was the preferred choice of the president.
