US to take 'tough look' at fighter task, top official states

The U.S. will carefully dissect its plans for a Next Generation Air Dominance ( NGAD) platform a future household of fighters and drones before deciding whether to proceed, Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall said on Saturday.

The cost of the future F-22 replacement has come under scrutiny after topping $300 million each, three times the cost of an F-35. However Kendall also highlighted evolving dangers, in an apparent reference to rapidly arming China.

The idea of using drones or Collaborative Combat Aircraft ( CCA) will stay part of the proposed efforts, he stated.

Before we make the commitment that we are close to making, we wish to make sure we have actually got the right style principle, Kendall said at Britain's Royal International Air Tattoo, the world's biggest military air program.

NGAD was developed before a variety of things: before the threat became so extreme, before CCAs were introduced into the equation and before we had some concerns with price that we are currently dealing with, Kendall informed reporters.

So we are going to take a tough look at NGAD before moving forward, however the family of systems which includes a crewed platform and CCAs and weapon systems and interactions ... is still quite the principle that we are pursuing.

The Air Force faces heavy costs for renewing its land-based nuclear deterrent and establishing the B-21 bomber.

Before we dedicate to the 2026 budget, we wish to be sure we are on the right path, Kendall told press reporters.

Experts participating in the air program said the depth of the evaluation suggested the Air Force wanted to refresh its view on whether NGAD stayed well adapted to threats positioned by China as its schedule slips into the 2030s.

NGAD is a whole series of programs under the umbrella of abilities that the Flying force wants in order both to better discourage China and to combat and win if essential, said Vago Muradian, editor of Defense & & Aerospace Report.

The Chinese are altering how they're going to fight. So the concern that a budget-constrained Flying force is asking is whether the 10s of billions of dollars is the right financial investment, or are there better methods of accomplishing some of these very same goals.

Boeing and Lockheed Martin are extensively seen as contending to win the core fighter part of the job.

The rethink has caught attention in Europe where Britain's. crewed-uncrewed GCAP task, in partnership with Japan and. Italy, may face scrutiny in an approaching UK defence evaluation and. France, Germany and Spain are working on the FCAS/SCAF job.

Partners in GCAP are expected to give an update at the. opening of the Farnborough International Airshow on Monday.
