• Delta warns that tariffs may force the airline to stop purchasing foreign-made aircraft

  Delta Air Lines has warned that tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imported planes and parts may force it to stop purchasing foreign-made aircraft and cancel flights that serve 10 million passengers a year. The Atlanta-based carrier's comments were made in an unreported filing by the U.S. Commerce Department late Tuesday, in response to an investigation into national security that was recently launched and could result in additional tariffs. Delta said that if potential tariffs are not adjusted in time, they could threaten the U.S. aircraft manufacturing industry and hinder its ability to buy aircraft made domestically or overseas. The airline stated that it will take delivery of 47 Airbus aircraft in 2023-2024, which are manufactured in Canada and France. Delta stated that if tariffs forced Delta to cancel these deliveries, it would have prevented the airline from operating flights for 10 million passengers a year. It said that a "similar impact" could be expected in the future if new tariffs for national security are introduced. Delta Airlines said that it would be forced to cancel contracts already in place and re-evaluate contracts currently under negotiation. After President Donald Trump announced the new duties in April, nearly all planes and aircraft parts imported by the industry will be subject to 10% tariffs. A new national security duty would increase that. Delta announced in April that it would defer orders for aircraft that were subject to tariffs. It was not clear what tariff rate would cause it to cancel its orders. The airlines and manufacturers argue that the sector should not be subject to tariffs. The Commerce Department launched an investigation last month called Section 232 to examine the risks imported goods pose to U.S. security. This could be used to justify higher tariffs for imported parts, engines and planes. Howard Lutnick, Commerce Secretary, said on Wednesday that the department will complete its review before the end of the month and then discuss the results with Trump. Aerospace and airline industry has said that new tariffs for imported commercial aircraft, engines and parts may put the safety of air travel and supply chains at risk or have other unintended effects. Airlines and manufacturers are lobbying Trump for a return to the tariff-free regime of the Civil Aircraft Agreement from 1979, where the U.S. sector had a $75 billion trade surplus each year. In separate comments, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce urged Trump to refrain from imposing additional tariffs on aerospace products. They said that they would "weaken U.S. manufacturers." Last year, 135 millions U.S. airline travelers traveled on regional aircraft. The chamber stated that "while the United States does not have domestic assembly of regional planes, imported regional aircraft all feature significant amounts of U.S. Content," Tariffs on this production are not justified by national security or commercial interests. Business Roundtable, an association of U.S. CEOs who are major players in the aerospace industry, warned that tariffs would lead to retaliatory actions, "which could significantly disrupt the U.S. Aerospace Industry, which is heavily dependent on foreign clients, and ultimately undermine the competitiveness U.S. products." This would be the largest London market debut since Air Astana listed in February 2024. Indivior: On Monday, the drugmaker announced that it would cancel its secondary listing at the London Stock Exchange with effect from July 25. It cited cost savings and its desire to align itself more closely with operations in the United States. The pharmaceutical company, worth 1.70 billion pounds ($1.25 billion), will continue to list on Nasdaq. BHP, the world's biggest miner in terms of market value (125.10 Billion dollars), made Australia its primary stock exchange when it terminated its dual-listing structures in 2021. When it left London's stock exchange, the company was ranked second by market value. Unilever, the Ben & Jerry’s maker, chose Amsterdam in February as its primary listing. The company, which had a turnover in 2024 of 9.47 billion euros (8.3 billion euro), will also have secondary listings in London, and New York. Glencore: In February, the Swiss miner announced that it was looking at moving its primary listing away from London. New York, which has a market capitalization of 34.5 billion pounds for the company, was the first option that it considered. Three sources familiar with the matter said in May that Shein, the online fast fashion retailer, is working on a Hong Kong listing after its London IPO failed to get the go-ahead from Chinese regulators. Shein, however, had sought a New York listing before attempting to list in London. This was part of Shein's efforts to gain credibility as a global company rather than one that is Chinese, and to have access to large Western investors. Ashtead, the second largest equipment rental company in America, announced in December that it planned to move its listing from London to New York. Ashtead, which has a market cap of 18.3 billion pounds and is listed in London, became a major U.S. company in the early 2000s. Just Eat Takeaway, the Amsterdam-listed food delivery service, delisted from London Stock Exchange last December. The company cited efforts to reduce administrative costs and regulations. The company's market value is 4,05 billion euros. Flutter Entertainment: In 2024, FanDuel's owner moved its primary listing from the US to the New York Stock Exchange. This was just a few short months after adding a secondary listing. CRH - The building materials solution provider with a market value of $61.29 billion switched to the NYSE as its primary listing in 2023. It will continue to maintain a standard listing at the London Stock Exchange. Arm Holdings, a UK-based designer of chip technology, chose Nasdaq to host its largest IPO in 2023. The company was listed in London from 18 years until 2016, when SoftBank acquired it for $32 billion. It is now worth just over $138 Billion.

• Airbus' procurement chief moves to India, but no successor has been named

  According to a memo that was seen by the Observer, Airbus' top procurement executive, Juergen Westermeier has been named to lead its operations in India and South Asia as of September 1. The memo stated that his successor "is subject to further notice". Airbus has declined to comment about internal promotions. The European planemaker is struggling to keep up with production and delivery schedules of passenger jets, while also trying to stabilize a global supply network that has been hit by labour shortages as well as a lack of experience following the COVID-19 epidemic. Airbus reported that its deliveries were down 4% in May, and 5% for the entire year. The company faces a difficult task to meet its goal of increasing delivery by 7%, to 820 aircraft, for the whole of 2025. Rob Morris, head of Cirium Ascend's consultancy, announced on LinkedIn that the Airbus A320neo was behind Boeing's 737 MAX production in May, for the first since August 2019. Airbus has declined to comment on the monthly production. It blamed the production shortfalls, especially in engines and certain aerostructures, on a weak supply chain. Westermeier is the second person to be moved from a critical engineering or industrial role in the last few weeks, after Sabine Klauke, the head of the group's technology division was shifted to focus on digital manufacturing and design systems. According to a 2021 letter, Westermeier pressed suppliers to improve their quality and to stock more. He led an initiative last year to unify standards. Some suppliers say a different focus is required to encourage the supply chain to support higher output. According to a person familiar with the company, Westermeier was not moved by the recent supply-chain situation which had already begun to stabilize. Guillaume Faury, the CEO of the company, praised Westermeier's performance in a memo that was seen by the reporter. Westermeier succeeds Remi Maillard, who was appointed head of technology by Airbus last month. Airbus is studying the building blocks of a future replacement for its most popular A320neo aircraft. • US Airlines seeks 2-year delay in secondary cockpit barrier rule

  The Federal Aviation Administration said that major U.S. carriers want to delay for two years, by August of this year, the requirement to install a secondary barrier in the cockpit to prevent intrusions. Airlines for America, a trade group that represents American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines as well as other major carriers, argued in a petition to the FAA that it should delay the finalization of the 2023 requirement because the FAA has yet to approve a secondary cockpit barricade and there are no approved manuals, training programs or procedures. The FAA announced that it would be accepting public comments on the airline's request until June 23. The FAA adopted security standards for the flight deck after the September 11 hijackings of four U.S. planes. These standards are designed to prevent forcible entry and unauthorized access. In the petition, the airlines said that they expected the FAA would certify the barriers by June or July. The FAA declined to comment immediately. This rule requires aircraft manufactures to install a physical second barrier on all planes that are used for commercial passenger services in the United States. In 2023, the FAA stated that the additional barrier would protect the flight deck from intrusions when the flightdeck door is opened. Air Line Pilots Association president Jason Ambrosi criticised the industry's request. He said: "We urge FAA to reject the latest stalling tactics and implement the secondary barrier requirement, as Congress mandated, without delay." Boeing, Airbus and Airlines for America argued for three years, but unions in 2023 wanted the rule to take effect immediately after publication. According to a federal law passed in 2018, the FAA had to adopt rules by 2019. However, it has stated that it must follow certain procedural rules to be able to impose new rules. The FAA does not require retrofitting of existing aircraft. The FAA set up rules in 2007 to address the security of the flight deck when the cockpit doors were opened. These included requiring that the door must be locked while the aircraft is in operation unless it was necessary to unlock it for authorized personnel. • Airlines stick to net zero target despite green fuel doubts

  The global airlines concluded a two-day conference on Tuesday, sticking to their target of zero net emissions by 2050. However, they expressed new concerns about the availability and cost of new fuels and planes. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents 350 airlines, has said that achieving the target will cost carriers $4.7 trillion or $174 billion per year. At least some of this amount is likely to be passed along as higher fares. IATA has avoided reopening the sensitive net zero debate despite earlier signs that airlines were becoming more sceptical. Instead, IATA bosses have pointed out a small window of opportunity for the industry. They increased their criticism, accusing energy companies of adding arbitrarily high charges to Europe and planemakers who have not delivered efficient jets in time. Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA, said: "We have plenty of time to reach our goal but we need more action from all the stakeholders in the value chain." Walsh warned in April that the agenda for net zero emissions was slipping off track, with comments that seemed to be intended to spark discussion. Walsh stated on Tuesday that there was no discussion of a delay in the goal at this week's New Delhi annual meeting. Plant-based aviation fuels are at the heart of industry sustainability efforts. The current supply of aviation fuels only covers a small fraction of the airlines' needs. Airlines have urged governments to increase their efforts. Marie Owens Thomsen, Chief Economist at IATA, said: "It is obvious that the oil companies do not produce (enough SAF). After a wave of investments in Europe, the energy industry claims that there is enough SAF available for now. However, some analysts and executives claim markets are oversupplied. Carl Nyberg Senior Vice President Renewable Products Commercial at SAF manufacturer Neste said: "Contrary what some say, we believe there is an oversupply in the SAF marketplace currently." Nyberg stated that he thought the problem was more about price. The cost of SAF ingredients is around three times higher than fossil jet fuel. Walsh, however, said that many airlines in the world are unable to obtain SAF without having it imported over long distances. This would defeat the goal of reducing emission. FuelsEurope, the European industry association, did not reply to a comment request. 'WANING ENTHUSIASM' The tone of the meeting changed just four years after industry leaders committed to stepping up their plans to combat climate change in response to mounting pressure from environmental and regulatory groups. Patrick Healy is the group chair of Cathay Pacific. He said, "There's some skepticism about energy transitions in general and you might even say that enthusiasm has waned." The falling price of jet fuel will cushion the worst effects of global tensions. Rob McLeod of Hartree Partners' energy risk solutions department urged airlines that the fuel savings could be used to increase investment in SAF, to address the concerns about funding the transition. The tariff war waged by U.S. president Donald Trump has cast a dark shadow on the outlook of the travel industry, as it has increased operating costs and impacted demand. The decarbonisation effort will be aided by new fuel-efficient jets. Production delays at Boeing and Airbus forced carriers to fly older planes. Healy stated that "everyone is realizing it's much more complex than we thought just a few short years ago." The summit was hosted by IndiGo budget airline and celebrated India's rise as one of the most exciting aviation markets. Prime Minister Narendra modi, who was in attendance for the first time as a leader of a country, said that India's airlines were ready to continue buying after "placing orders for more than 2,00 new jets." Southwest Airlines, a pioneer in low-cost travel, was also welcomed as a new member of the IATA. Southwest Airlines has long been a symbol of a rebellion against traditional airlines. India's largest airlines, despite the global uncertainty in the aviation industry due to trade tensions, shaky consumer trust and a lack of confidence in the economy, are continuing with their orders for new aircraft, after making record deals just two years ago. Industry officials warned that the growth could slow down if infrastructure problems, taxation and plane shortages are not addressed at the annual meeting of the International Air Transport Association. Indian airlines are forced to make large and expensive detours in order to avoid Pakistani airspace due the hostilities between India and its neighbour. This requires more fuel, as well as better passenger care. People familiar with the situation have said that carriers have asked the Indian Government to waive certain fees and provide tax relief. However, it is unclear if the government will help despite the high-flying language. New Delhi wants India to become a global aviation hub that creates jobs, similar to Dubai. Dubai currently handles most of India's traffic internationally. Modi said that India was ready to embrace the possibilities of the aviation industry in the future. Officials in the industry said that to transform the industry, billions of dollars will need to be invested into airports, supply chains and new regulations. PUNCHING UNDER ITS WEIGHT The numbers are promising. IATA predicts that passenger traffic in India is expected to triple in the next 20-years. The country has also set an ambitious target of 400 airports by 2047. This compares with 157 airports in 2024. India's Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said to global airline CEOs at a New Delhi conference: "We are rapidly emerging as a strategically connector country... India is also a natural connector in the skies and aviation." India is already the third largest aviation market in the world by seat count, after the U.S.A. and China. There is a lot of potential for India to expand. According to IATA, India is the world's largest country by population, but it only accounts for 4.2% of air passengers. IATA data indicates that 174 million Indians flew domestically and internationally in 2024. This is compared with 730 million Chinese passengers. The outlook for the Indian economy as well as air transport is very promising. IATA stated in a report about the Indian market that such outcomes were not guaranteed. Analysts and executives in the aviation industry said that more work is needed to improve infrastructure, update rules, lower taxes, and make life easier for airlines. "Even regulators will agree they need to update the regulation because there is a good reason why India does not punch above its weight. Walsh responded to a reporter's question by saying, "I know India invests in this area." Supply chain problems are causing delays in the delivery of fuel-efficient new planes. This is affecting airline growth worldwide. IndiGo, India's largest airline, has leased aircraft in order to expand internationally as it waits to receive new planes. IndiGo partnered this week with Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic, and Delta to expand the reach of IndiGo Tickets using their networks.

• Airbus deliveries dropped 4% in May according to sources

  Airbus delivered 51 aircraft in May, according to industry sources, a drop of 4% compared to the same month last. This brings the total number of aircraft delivered so far in 2024 to around 243, a 5% drop from the first five month period. Airbus declined to comment before a performance bulletin for the month of June. Delivery Delays After a recovery in the passenger market following the pandemic, more people are now flying. However, airline growth is being hindered by prolonged plane delivery delays as well as supply chain bottlenecks that increase maintenance and repair times. Walsh said that predictions of delays in aircraft deliveries throughout the decade were "absolutely unacceptable". As global airline chiefs gathered for a summit on the fastest-growing aviation industry in the world, Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Minister, was scheduled to address them on Monday. Air India ordered 470 aircraft from both suppliers by 2023, a record order. It also purchased another 100 Airbus planes in the same year. The simultaneous orders for two planes come at a moment when aircraft manufacturers are scrambling to resolve supply chain problems, which have led to delays in aircraft deliveries and an upcoming jet shortage. Air India needs new planes to regain market share that has been lost due to rivals. The airline, owned by the government for years, is embarking on an ambitious modernisation program to reclaim this market share. It was not immediately known how many narrowbody jets were included in the new order, but two sources said that it would be hundreds.   The International Air Transport Association announced on Sunday that it expects sustainable aviation fuel production to double by 2025, reaching 2 million tonnes. • IndiGo to expand network with Virgin Atlantic, Air France-KLM and Delta deals

  The airlines announced on Sunday that IndiGo, India's largest carrier, had reached an agreement with Air France KLM, Virgin Atlantic, and Delta in order to expand long-haul flights to North America, Europe, and Britain. IndiGo is expanding internationally and has a large domestic network within India, which is the third largest air passenger market in the world. IndiGo, once the partnership is completed, will be able sell flights operated by partners outside of India under its name, as well as select flights from Amsterdam or Manchester to Europe and North America. It has been leasing planes to cover the delays in aircraft deliveries and to expand internationally. Norse Atlantic Airways has announced that it will lease six Boeing wide-body 787 jets to the airline by early next year. The Indian aviation regulator announced this week that it will only extend the existing leasing agreement IndiGo has with Turkish Airlines until August. India has publicly criticised the arrangement after Turkey supported Pakistan in the recent conflict between two South Asian neighbours.
