Venezuela suspends flights to Colombia following arrests

Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela's interior minister, said that he had ordered the suspension of flights to Venezuela from Colombia after more than 30 people were arrested, including 17 foreigners, on suspicion of "conspiracy."

Venezuelan authorities have repeatedly warned of conspiracies, planned attacks and other threats against President Nicolas Maduro and the power grid in Venezuela.

Both the United States and the opposition have denied the accusations.

Cabello told local media during a conference that 38 people had been arrested for the alleged conspiracy.

The minister added that all flights to and from Colombia were suspended immediately.

Cabello stated that "we have discovered a plot of conspiracy and terror, we have arrested a group Venezuelans returning to their country with explosive artifacts", adding that this group of 38 consisted of "bombers (migrant smugglers), coyotes and mercenaries".

Later, the Venezuelan aviation authority announced that the measure would last until 6 pm local time on May 26, 2019. Venezuela will hold legislative and gubernatorial election on Sunday.

The Colombian foreign ministry confirmed that it was informed of the suspension of flights by Venezuela, but did not have any information on detained Colombians. Reporting by Mayela armas and Deisy buitrago Writing Julia Symmes-Cobb Editing Rosalba O’Brien
