Syria signs new contract with CMA CGM for the operation of Latakia Port Container Terminal

The General Authority for Land and Sea Ports of Syria announced on Wednesday it had signed a contract with the French shipping and logistic group CMA CGM for the operation of the container terminal in the Latakia Port.

In a statement, the Syrian port authority stated that the contract will include new terms, mechanisms and payment of previous dues on both sides.

CMA CGM didn't immediately respond to an inquiry for comment.

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, the discussions leading to the new contract include changes to revenue distribution as well as the length of the contract.

Sources said that the Syrian authorities hoped to negotiate an increase in the share of revenues compared to the previous contract. They also hoped for a shorter lease period and improvements on the technical side, such as a new ship deck.

Latakia is Syria's principal maritime gateway. CMA CGM took over Latakia’s container terminal from Bashar al Assad in 2009. The contract has been renewed several times, most recently by the authorities in October 2024.

Assad was removed from power by a lightning-fast rebel offensive on Dec. 8, and a new transitional government now holds power.

CMA CGM, a French-Lebanese company controlled by Rodolphe S. Saade (a billionaire whose family has Syrian roots), is owned and operated by the franco-lebanese Rodolphe S.
