Citadel to buy power firm Energy Grid in very first Japanese acquisition

Hedge fund Citadel will buy Japanese power company Energy Grid in its very first acquisition in Japan and the first major U.S. financial investment in Japan's wholesale energy market in recent years, Citadel said in a statement.

The privately held Energy Grid offers power rate risk management services to Japanese companies and the offer will offer Citadel direct access to the Japanese power market

Considering that Energy Grid's establishment in 2021, the power market. in resource-poor Japan has been unstable due to Russia's. intrusion of Ukraine, which sped up an international energy crisis.

Japan, which imports the majority of its energy resources, was. currently in a precarious position following the March 2011. earthquake and Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, when much of its. significant nuclear power stations were shut down.

The transaction is expected to close in the 3rd quarter of. 2024, based on conditions. The deal size has not been. revealed.

Miami, Florida-based Citadel manages around $63. billion in assets and has gotten more than 7.5% up until now in 2024,. according to a person acquainted with the matter.
