Power partially brought back in New Zealand's northern area after transmission tower collapse

Power has actually been partly restored to thousands of homes in New Zealand's northernmost area after a transmission tower collapsed on Thursday, although a full repair will require a minimum of another day, stateowned power transmitter Transpower said.

The failure, which affected big parts of New Zealand's Te Tai Tokerau region and its roughly 200,000 citizens, took place at 11 a.m. (2300 GMT, Wednesday) after heavy rain tore down a. transmission tower.

Transpower stated some power had been brought back by Thursday. night but it would take until a minimum of Friday afternoon to. bring power levels back to regular.

Until then, it asked customers to minimise electricity usage. so there was enough power for all homeowners.

Energy companies Northpower and Top Energy NZ stated they. would cut power for water heating to conserve electricity.

The Whangarei District Council said it had brought back power to. all however two sets of traffic lights.
