Due to the ice storm, hundreds of thousands of Canadians in eastern Canada are without power

According to Hydro One, over 300,000 Canadians were without power in Ontario as a weekend ice storm ravaged the region.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning for freezing rain and snow in Ottawa, Quebec, and Ontario.

Hydro One's website stated that the main cause of outages is the weight of tree limbs from freezing rain. It also noted the possibility of flooding in central Ontario.

According to the website, more than 350,000 customers had been affected by Sunday afternoon. Power is expected to be restored to all customers on April 1.

Alectra, an utilities provider, said that about 35,000 customers were without power. This was mainly in Barrie, which is a town located north of Toronto. It said that progress was slow because of the ice covering the lines. However, all resources were deployed.

Orillia, Ontario, declared a state-of-emergency due to the storm. The prolonged freezing rain has caused widespread power outages and hazardous road conditions. Trees and hydro lines have also been downed, causing damage to both public and private infrastructure.

The city stated on its website that "this is a serious situation, with dangerous road conditions, trees downed and damaged hydro lines and public and private infrastructure."

Residents in Ontario have reported on social media about roads being closed because of uprooted trees. They also said they heard the sound of crashing trees since the storm started. (Reporting and editing by Nivedita Balu, Toronto)
