Slovakia PM Fico will meet EU's von der Leyen in order to push for the restart of Druzhba Oil Flows

Slovak PM Robert Fico announced on Sunday that he will meet with EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, on Tuesday. Slovakia and Hungary are increasing pressure on Ukraine to resume Russian oil flow, while warning Slovakia it could block a large EU loan to Kyiv.

Since late January, Russian oil has been stopped flowing through the Druzhba Pipeline to Hungary and Slovakia. Kyiv claimed that a Russian attack had caused an 'incident' which seriously damaged the pipeline.

The outage has ignited one of the most heated arguments between the two neighbours since Russia's full-scale invasion in Ukraine 2022.

Ukraine claims that the pipeline can't be repaired fast.

Hungary and Slovakia are members of the European Union that still import Russian oil, and have maintained ties with Moscow. They accuse Kyiv, for political reasons, of consciously?delaying? a restart.

FICO REPEATES THREAT OF BLOCKING EU LOAN TOUKRAINE

Hungary has rejected new EU sanctions against Russia, as well as a 90 billion euro loan from the EU to Ukraine. Fico repeated his threat to stop the loan on Facebook in a video posted Sunday.

He stated that he would meet von der Leyen and encourage experts to visit Druzhba.

Fico, in referring to the loan, said: "But the main message will be that Slovakia is prepared to take the baton from Hungary if necessary."

"Blocking the huge military gift given to Ukraine by Russia is a legitimate way to restore oil supplies."

The EU Commission announced Friday that it was examining ways to restore Druzhba's oil flow, including possible financial assistance.

In the midst of this dispute, Slovakia has already stopped emergency?power supply to Ukraine.

As Hungary prepares to hold a close election next month with Viktor Orban as Prime Minister, the dispute escalates. Orban has been in power for 16 year and made the war in Ukraine his central theme of campaigning.
