Maersk AGM votes on Israel weapons transport amid Gaza War

Maersk shareholders will vote Tuesday on a shareholder proposition to stop any arms shipments to Israel as long as the war in Gaza continues. The Danish company has rejected this proposal so far. Experts from the United Nations have called for countries to impose sanctions on Israel and an arms embargo, arguing its military campaign in Gaza, which has killed more than 48,000. According to Gaza's health officials, this is genocide.

Israel rejects the U.N. Report and claims it is fighting against Hamas. According to Israeli figures, Hamas fighters stormed southern Israel and killed 1,200 people and took 253 hostages.

On the agenda of Tuesday's Annual General Meeting (AGM) is a proposal by Danish shareholder group Kritiske Aktionaerer to prohibit Maersk from shipping weapons to Israel.

Maersk stated that the board of the company did not support this proposal.

Maersk stated that the proposal was incorrect, because the company does not transport arms to Israel.

In a separate proposal, the activist group Eko called on Maersk in order to increase transparency in their human rights processes. They focused in particular on areas of high risk such as arms shipments.

Maersk said that it did not also support Eko’s proposal.

Eko stated in a press release that the company denied any arms shipments despite Danish media reporting the opposite.

Danwatch, a Danish investigative media outlet and Ekstra Bladet, a Danish tabloid, have both reported that Maersk had sent military equipment and armoured vehicles to Israel.

Denmark, the headquarters of Maersk, currently does not have an arms embargo, and it has not placed any restrictions on the sending of weapons to Israel.

Maersk's General Meeting will begin at 1500 Central European Time (1400 GMT). Reporting by Louise Rasmussen and Jacob GronholtPedersen. Terje Solsvik, Mark Potter and Terje Solsvik edited the article.
