Singapore's Keppel buys Japanese AI data center amid AI boom

Singapore's Keppel announced on Tuesday that it had agreed to purchase a data center facility with artificial intelligence capabilities being developed in Tokyo by Japan's largest property group Mitsui Fudosan.

The asset manager announced less than two weeks ago that it planned to double the funds currently under management for data centres from S$9 ($6.84) billion to S$19 (S$19.8 billion) in the near future to take advantage of the AI frenzy.

The Singaporean company announced that Mitsui Fudosan would develop the core, shell, and interior of the data center, while Keppel’s private fund will be responsible for the fitting-out work.

Keppel will be the facility manager once the data centre opens in 2027. This will add to the company's recurring revenue.

Christina Tan, Keppel’s chief investment officer (CEO) and head of fund management said: "We are looking forward to working with Mitsui to develop an even better pipeline of assets to support our Keppel Data Centre Fund III."

The company didn't immediately reply to an email requesting the value of the transaction. ($1 = 1.3167 Singapore dollars) (Reporting by Shivangi Lahiri in Bengaluru; Editing by Shilpi Majumdar)
