India bans imports of Pakistani goods amid tensions over terrorist killings

India announced on Saturday that it has banned the importation of goods from Pakistan or those transiting through Pakistan, and also barred Pakistani vessels as tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors rise in the wake a deadly terrorist attack in the disputed Kashmir area.

In a notice, India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade stated that the ban will take immediate effect.

It said that the restriction was imposed to protect national security and public interest.

Last week, suspected militants attacked a tourist resort in Pahalgam in the Kashmir valley. At least 26 people were killed.

Both India and Pakistan claim the Muslim-majority Himalayan area, which has been at the center of wars, insurgencies, and diplomatic standoffs.

India accuses Pakistan of being involved in the attack. Islamabad denies this. Pakistan claims to have "credible intelligence", that India is planning a military strike.

Pakistan has taken a number of retaliatory actions, including halting border trade and closing its airspace for Indian carriers. It also expelled Indian diplomats.

It also warned that any attempts to stop the flow of water promised in a treaty dating back decades would be considered an attack.

India announced on Saturday that ships flying the Pakistani flag will not be allowed into any Indian ports, while Indian-flagged vessels won't be visiting any Pakistani ports.

The Directorate General of Shipping issued a statement saying that the order was issued "to ensure safety of Indian assets and cargo, as well as connected infrastructure in the public interest and in interest of Indian shipping".
