Iranian GTC purchased at least 250,000 T Russian grain last week, traders claim

European traders reported on Wednesday that Iran's Government Trading Corporation, or GTC, is believed to have bought at least 250.000 metric tons wheat in the last week. The wheat was expected to come from Russia.

The purchase was much higher than the earlier estimates by traders of 120,000 tonnes.

Some traders estimated that 500,000 tones or more were purchased.

The reports reflect the opinions of traders, and it is still possible to estimate prices and volume later.

The purchase was thought to have taken place in multiple deals, mostly for April delivery.

Some reports reported that some purchases cost around 310 Euros ($338.58) per ton, including freight (c&f). Iran has traditionally refused to purchase grain in U.S. Dollars.

It was believed that at least three large Russian companies, including one large trading house backed by the Russian state, had made sales.

Traders reported that a wheat international tender was issued, but it was restricted to a small number of trading firms. The wheat was believed to be milling wheat with a 12.5% protein content.

Iran has issued numerous statements regarding its stance on the issue.

International tenders

In recent weeks, the country has imported corn, barley, and soymeal. Wheat has not been a priority.

One grain trader stated, "Iran had an excellent wheat harvest last season but there are concerns about the dryness of this year's Iranian crops and market speculation that some supplies were being collected in advance for supplies."

The West has not sanctioned food in Iran because of its nuclear program, but the sanctions have affected Iran's financial sector, causing complex and irregular payment arrangements.
