World Cup hotel and flight bookings are on the rise despite US violence

Amadeus, a travel technology company, reported on Tuesday that bookings for flights to North America increased since the announcement of the schedule of matches in the Soccer World Cup in December. 18% were made by British travellers.

Since President Donald Trump was elected in November 2024 the number of European tourists visiting the United States has declined. Many are deterred from traveling by increased border checks.

Bookings for the World Cup are on the rise, especially among England and Scotland fans.

Bookings for the tournament that will take place in the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico between June 11 and July 19 were made in the month following the draw.

The?data doesn't show if more recent U.S. immigration raids have had any impact on bookings for 2026. A major sporting event is not a guarantee of a boost in travel to the host nation, as the 2024 Paris Olympics showed.

Travel analyst Paul Charles said: "The tournament offers a chance for fans to watch some of the best footballers in the world. They will go anywhere to watch them, regardless of the politics and policies of the host nation."

Charles, CEO of The PC Agency, said: "However safety is also a major factor. Visitors will hope that calm prevails throughout the host cities and that their travel insurance remains valid for their planned trip in June or July."

Amadeus data shows that the largest spike in bookings per day occurred for the first match between Brazil and Morocco played in New York City, with more than 2,500 flight 'bookings.

The number of hotel bookings has also increased in Canada and Mexico. In Mexico City, the average occupancy rate of hotels on the nights before three scheduled matches was 21%. This is up from 4% at the same time last. (Reporting and editing by Alexander Smith; Joanna Plucinska)
