Sources: Ukrainian drones strike Ryazan oil refinery, a large Russian oil refinery

Four industry sources said that Ukrainian drones struck a Russian oil refining facility in the city Ryazan over night, causing an explosion and damaging equipment.

Sources said that oil storage had been set on fire at the refinery. A railway loading rack, as well as a hydrotreater used to remove impurities in refined products were among the damaged equipment. Rosneft, the large Russian state oil company that owns this refinery, could not be reached immediately.

The Russian Defence Ministry announced that its air defences intercepted and destroyed 121 drones which were targeting 13 different regions including Moscow. The report did not mention any casualties or damages.

The Ryazan region is located southeast of Moscow.

Ukraine said that it also hit the Ryazan refining plant. Andriy Kovalenko is the head of Ukraine's center for countering misinformation. He described the refinery, as well as the Kremniy factory in Bryansk which Kyiv claims produces micro-electronics used by Russian weapons systems.

Unverified videos were posted by Telegram channels of what bloggers called large fires in Ryazan. The oil depot and power station were said to have been damaged.

According to industry sources, the loading rack on the train caught fire following the attack.

"A 20,000 ton reservoir is on fire." Source: "Adjacent reservoirs also suffered damage, and the loading has been suspended."

Ryazan refinery will process 13.1 million metric tonnes (262,000 barrels a day) or almost 5% the total Russian refining output in 2024.

According to data from a reliable source, it produced 2.2 millions tons of gasoline and 3.4 millions tons of diesel. It also produced 4.3 million tonnes of fuel oil, 1 million tons jet fuel. Reporting and Editing by Peter Graff
