Spain and Portugal are on alert after more storm damage

On Thursday, large areas of Spain and Portugal were on high alert as strong winds and heavy rains pounded the Iberian Peninsula, causing trees to fall, disrupting transportation and forcing some schools to close.

In the recent storms that have hit Catalonia, a person is in a critical condition after being hit by a tree. The mayor's office in Barcelona said that a?woman suffered serious injuries in Barcelona when a roof collapsed in the place where she worked. Another person was also seriously injured by a lamppost that fell.

A levee had broken beneath a section of the A1 between Portugal's south and north.

The highest level of alert has been declared in the Spanish northern regions of Galicia, Cantabria, and the Basque Country following the arrival Wednesday night of Nils. This is the eighth storm that has?hit Spain so far this year.

The weather agency AEMET warned of waves as high as nine metres (30 feet).

As wind gusts exceeding 105 km/h (65 mph), felled trees and disrupted road and rail traffic in the region, authorities in Catalonia suspended all classes and sports events.

Catalan civil services issued a mobile alert to warn the public not to travel and stay inside.

Aena, the airport operator in Barcelona, said that more than 100 flights leaving or landing from El Prat airport had been?cancelled. Aena reported that the weather forecast improved and that the airport was expected to gradually resume normal service within the next few hours.

"ATMOSPHERIC RIVE" OVER PORTUGAL

A weather phenomenon in Portugal known as "atmospheric rivers" brought downpours to the north, where authorities evacuated 3,000 residents.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere said Storm Oriana, a separate Atlantic Depression approaching the northern tip of the peninsula, would not directly affect Portugal but cause heavy rain and wind in most of the country Thursday and Friday.

Infrastructure Minister Miguel Pinto Luz said to reporters that it would take several weeks to restore the affected section of the A1 motorway, because repairs were needed while the floodwaters receded.

The Aguieira Reservoir on the Mondego River near Coimbra is at 99% capacity, which increases the risk of flooding if the authorities increase discharges. (Reporting and writing by David Latona, Paolo Laudani, Charlie Devereux, Timothy Heritage).
