Norway projections smaller drop in 2028 power surplus

Norway's surplus electricity production, the difference in between domestic output and demand, will decrease at a slower speed than expected as usage growth slows, the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) anticipated on Friday.

The NVE now forecasts an increase in need for power to 154 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2028 from 140 TWh in 2024, less than the 159 TWh it had forecasted in August in 2015, the firm said.

Several significant developments by power-hungry markets deal with delay and will just be completed in the years after 2028, while others had actually been shelved altogether, NVE said.

Power production capability is on the other hand set to grow by an accumulated 5 TWh to 163 TWh in 2028, with the brand-new supply split about uniformly between solar and hydropower, it included.

The brand-new projections would offer Norway a surplus production of 9 TWh in 2028, down from 18 TWh this year but much better than the 4 TWh surplus formerly seen, NVE said.
