Forecast demand on the largest US electric grid is forecast to be close to winter records

According to the latest seven-day forecast of the operator, the power demand on the biggest U.S. grid is expected to reach a peak on Friday at?141 gigawatts. This will be just short of the winter record for the PJM interconnection.

PJM’s?performance?"has been closely monitored partly because its heavy concentration data centers, whose consumption of power is rising faster than the grid's ability to put more generation on line.

The operator, who manages electricity flow for 67 millions people in 13 Midwest and Mid-Atlantic States and Washington, D.C., managed to navigate a snowstorm, and 10 days of freezing weather, without ordering rolling blackouts.

On Friday, the estimated generation outages were 15 gigawatts or 11% of all committed capacity. PJM data shows that generation outages peaked at 22 GW earlier in the week. According to PJM, the forecast for this weekend was to range between 11 GW and 14 GW.

PJM forecasted earlier this week that its record-breaking winter demand would be smashed by Friday. The company predicted 148 GW in electricity consumption. PJM set its record for the winter season in January 2025, with 143.7 GW.

But?PJM lowered its forecasts because temperatures in certain parts of the territory were higher than expected. The U.S. Department of Energy also encouraged data centers to use backup generators. This would 'ease the strain on PJM resources.

The spot wholesale electricity price in PJM was $173 per MWh on Friday morning. This is a far cry from the spikes that occurred earlier in this week, which reached $3,000 / MWh.

PJM, as well as the electric grids of New York and New England, have been forced to deal with a congested 'high-voltage line network throughout their respective territories. The surge in demand for electricity caused by temperatures above 0 degrees Fahrenheit this week has led to power line overloads. The cold weather has also reduced the capacity of power stations in PJM territory.
