Ugandan security forces detain lots of young protesters, states rights group

Ugandan security forces apprehended lots of youths on Tuesday, a rights group stated, as they took part in a prohibited protest rally in downtown Kampala versus main corruption and declared human rights abuses by the country's rulers.

A witness saw the detentions being made, while a. video published by NTV Uganda on the X social media platform revealed. a small group of young people being intercepted and detained by. police.

The protesters waved placards and shouted slogans knocking. corruption. One used a T-shirt bearing the words Speaker Must. Resign.

A minimum of 45 individuals were apprehended by security workers. during the crackdown, according to Chapter Four, a Ugandan human. rights group that is using legal services to the detainees.

An authorities spokesperson was not instantly offered to. confirm how many individuals had actually been apprehended.

A minimum of five of those apprehended were charged and. remanded in custody till July 30. They were implicated of being a. common nuisance and also being idle and disorderly,. according to a charge sheet seen .

Authorities had banned the protest, citing intelligence they. said showed criminally-minded youths may pirate it in order to. loot and vandalise.

Soldiers and cops were deployed around the parliament. structure and in the centre of the Ugandan capital with the aim. of preventing any protesters.

All roads to the parliament were obstructed off, with just. lawmakers and other parliamentary personnel having access, and NTV. Uganda images revealed military armoured personnel providers. patrolling the area.

Ugandans with organizations near parliament were experiencing. problem getting to their premises.

It's like a war zone, Edwin Mugisha, who works in Kampala,. informed , describing the military patrols.

On Monday cops sealed off the workplaces of Uganda's most significant. opposition party, accusing it of mobilising for the demonstrations,. and apprehended some celebration officials, including its lawmakers.

The party denied it was arranging the march, but said it. supported it.

Opposition leaders and rights activists state embezzlement and. misuse of federal government funds are prevalent in Uganda. They have. long implicated President Yoweri Museveni of failing to prosecute. corrupt senior authorities who are politically loyal or related to. him.

Museveni has repeatedly denied condoning corruption and says. whenever there is sufficient proof, perpetrators consisting of. lawmakers and even ministers are prosecuted.
