Spanish truckers to stage series of strikes to require earlier retirement

Spain's truck and bus drivers will start a series of strikes on Oct. 28 to demand earlier retirement on much better conditions, union leaders stated on Monday.

Truck motorists will abandon Oct. 28, Nov. 11, Nov. 28, Nov. 29, Dec. 5, Dec. 9, and will start an indefinite strike on Dec. 23 if their demands are not met, agents of the country's 2 main unions, the CCOO and UGT, informed a news conference.

The unions require that motorists' employment conditions such as the retirement age, now at 67, and the right to partial retirement be improved and adapted to the conditions of other categories of employees who deal with comparable kind of risks than drivers.

Age is an identifying factor in motor skills, sensory and cognitive loss and constitutes a threat not only for the worker but likewise for the remainder of the individuals, said Diego Buenestado, UGT's secretary for road and city transportation.

A month-long strike by truckers in 2022 brought Spanish supply chains to a halt, triggered food lacks, set off a bout of inflation and struck economic growth.
