Canada Post workers go on nationwide strike ahead of holiday season

About 55,000 Canada Post workers went on strike for the second time in 6 years on Friday after their union said it had stopped working to reach a pay handle the postal operator in the runup to the holiday.

Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon, who has two times this year moved to end work disagreements in other sectors, explained he was not considering another intervention for the time being.

The union is demanding wage boosts in line with inflation, cost-of-living adjustment payments to be rolled into the fundamental wage rate, and safe working conditions. The union had issued a three-day strike notice previously today.

After a year of bargaining with little development, postal employees made the hard choice to strike, the Canadian Union of Postal Employees stated in a declaration.

Separately, Canada Post stated operations would close down throughout the strike.

If the strike drags on, it could enhance business for private competitors United Parcel Service and FedEx.
