DHL Express to buy sustainable aviation fuel from Japan's Cosmo beginning April

DHL Express, a division of Germany's Deutsche Post, said on Tuesday it would purchase sustainable air travel fuel (SAF) from an unit of Japan's Cosmo Energy Holdings starting in April.

The German logistics company will acquire 7,200 kilolitres of SAF each year from Cosmo, which will be produced locally.

DHL will start utilizing the green fuel for set up air cargo flights from Chubu Centrair International Airport in central Japan, making Chubu the first airport in Asia where it procures SAF.

DHL intends to increase its SAF usage to 30% or more by 2030 and plans to add 3 more airports - consisting of another in Asia - for SAF procurement later on this year, Tony Khan, president of DHL Japan, informed press reporters. Chubu will be its 10th airport worldwide for SAF procurement.

Cosmo, Japan's third-biggest oil refiner, plans to start full-blown production of 30,000 kilolitres of SAF each year in April at its Sakai refinery in Osaka.

It aims to produce SAF from utilized cooking oil in collaboration with 2 companies, marking Japan's first massive SAF production effort.
