US Senate Democratic Leader proposes ban on foreign Air Force One aircraft

Chuck Schumer, U.S. Senate Democratic Leader, introduced on Monday a bill to prevent foreign aircraft being used for Air Force One - the aircraft that carries the U.S. President.

Schumer introduced "The Presidential Airlift Security Act", after hearing last week about President Donald Trump's plans to accept a $400-million airplane from Qatar. Legal experts said that this raised questions regarding the scope of laws relating to gifts from other governments, and were intended to prevent corruption and improper influences.

Experts said that retrofitting the luxury aircraft offered by Qatar's Royal Family would require security upgrades as well as communications improvements to stop spies listening in, and equipment to repel incoming missiles.

Costs were unknown, but they could be substantial given Boeing Co.'s current efforts to build two new Air Force One aircraft exceed $5 billion.

The New York Democrat's bill would prevent the Department of Defense using any funds for the purchase or modification of foreign aircraft to serve as President's air transport.

Trump's Republicans are in control of the Senate and House of Representatives. They would have to both approve it and override Trump's veto.

It was a new effort from Democrats to oppose this plan. Schumer pledged last week to block Trump's nominees for the Justice Department, until the agency reported what it knew about Qatar's proposal.
