Serbian opposition needs arrests, resignations over train station disaster

Thousands of protesters gathered in front of the Serbian federal government building on Monday requiring arrests of those accountable for a mishap at a. railway station in the northern town of Novi Sad in which 14. individuals were killed.

Despite rain and a state holiday, opposition activists. vented their disappointment that no one has actually been detained nor. processed over what they say was carelessness and corruption by. the authorities.

The disaster on Nov. 1 in Novi Sad, about 70 km (40 miles). northwest of Belgrade, occurred when roof along the entrance. to the station suddenly collapsed, eliminating 14 individuals and. significantly hurting three.

This wasn't a mishap ... They were eliminated by corruption,. criminal offense, unpublished agreements, neglect and greed, lawyer. Jovan Rajic told the crowd from a phase. That is why we are all. here, to require obligation and justice.

Under an original plan, the protesters were supposed to hand. their needs for the resignations of Prime Minister Milos. Vucevic and Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric to President Aleksandar. Vucic.

But the governmental palace was locked and cordoned off by. cops, so they said they would hand the needs, consisting of the. publishing of secret agreements on the train station. reconstruction, to the parliament.

Unless their needs have actually been fulfilled, the opposition MPs will. require a parliament no-confidence vote in the government, they. stated.

Protesters were bring banners reading Corruption eliminates. and Criminal activity, not Disaster.

This is the least we could and needed to do for the crime that. was committed in Novi Sad, said Miroslav Sarenac, 69.

Serbia's opposition politicians, activists and rights groups. implicate authorities faithful to Vucic and his Serbian Progressive. Party of rampant corruption, ties to organised crime, nepotism. and excessive bureaucracy.

Vucic and his allies reject such claims.

The station in Novi Sad was renovated in 2021 and 2022. Other minor work continued until July this year.
