China issues flood alerts following heavy rains in the southern regions

China's National Meteorological Centre issued an alert on Wednesday for heavy rainfall and flooding in the southern regions. The centre forecast the worst storms this year.

The NMC warned of a high-risk of mountain flooding, geological disasters, and localised floods in southern provinces due to heavy rainfall, including in Jiangxi and Fujian.

CCTV reported that in Jiangxi the forecasts indicated torrential rainfall in some areas could reach 150 millimetres (5.7 inches) while in Guangxi authorities were preparing for flash floods.

Railway authorities reported that heavy rains in Shenzhen caused several trains to be suspended from service between May 28 and 29.

Meteorologists attribute the longer and more intense heatwaves and heavier and more unpredictable rains in China to climate change. Authorities have stated that the country's large population makes it particularly vulnerable to climate changes.

At least 13 people have died and several others are missing after heavy rains in southern Guangdong, the Guangxi area and the southwestern Guizhou Province.

After landslides trapped dozens of people in Guizhou, the authorities sent in the military to help rescue them. (Reporting and editing by Farah master and the Beijing Newsroom)
