Asian spot prices flatten as Europe's rising supply and weak demand cap gains

After three weeks of rising prices, Asian spot LNG prices have been flattening out this week due to a lackluster demand in Asia and an increase in supply from Europe.

Average LNG price for July deliveries into North-east Asia Industry sources estimate that the price per million British Thermal Units (mmBtu) was $12.40.

Martin Senior, Argus' head of LNG prices, noted that despite the extremely low production at Bintulu, Malaysia, where maintenance was being performed and causing delays in shipments, Asia also had a soft demand this week.

He said that the prices are still too high for price-sensitive buyers in Asia. This week, he posted only a few requirements.

If prices drop another $1/mmBtu then we'll see some interest from Asian buyers," said he, adding that the arbitrage of U.S. LNG for Asia, taking into account full shipping, is closed for this week. However, the arbitrage of Nigerian supply for Asia is still open.

S&P Global Commodity Insights estimated its daily North West Europe LNG Marker for cargoes to be delivered in July ex-ship at $11.211/mmBtu, on May 29. This is a $0.52/mmBtu reduction from the gas price in July at the Dutch TTF Hub. The sentiment was eased by the abundance of waterborne LNG cargoes as well as the pipeline supply.

Spark Commodities set the price of July delivery at 11.17/mmBtu. Argus compared the two prices.

For the first time after over three weeks, the U.S. Arbitrage to Northeast Asia via Panama has closed out and is now marginally pointing towards Europe.

He added that in LNG freight, Atlantic rates fell for the fourth week running to $29500/day last Friday while Pacific rates remained at $20750/day. (Reporting and editing by Varun H. K.; Reporting by Emily Chow)
