US to propose barring Chinese software, hardware in linked automobiles, sources say

The U.S. Commerce Department is expected on Monday to propose forbiding Chinese software and hardware in connected and autonomous lorries on U.S. roadways due to nationwide security concerns, sources informed Reuters.

The Biden administration has raised serious concerns about the collection of information by Chinese companies on U.S. motorists and infrastructure along with the prospective foreign manipulation of connected cars. The suggested guideline would ban the import and sale of automobiles from China with key communications or automated driving system software application or hardware.

The department plans to provide the public thirty days to comment before any finalization of the guidelines, the sources stated, adding that the department plans to propose making the prohibitions on software reliable in the 2027 design year and the prohibitions on hardware would work in January 2029. The Commerce Department decreased to comment on Saturday.
