Serbian opposition needs arrests, resignations over train station disaster

Thousands of protesters gathered in front of the Serbian federal government structure on Monday demanding arrests of those responsible for an accident at a. train station in the northern town of Novi Sad in which 14. individuals were eliminated.

In spite of rain and a state holiday, opposition activists. vented their disappointment that nobody has actually been detained nor. processed over what they state was negligence and corruption by. the authorities.

The catastrophe on Nov. 1 in Novi Sad, about 70 km (40 miles). northwest of Belgrade, took place when roofing along the entrance. to the station all of a sudden collapsed, eliminating 14 people and. severely injuring three.

This wasn't a mishap ... They were killed by corruption,. criminal activity, unpublished contracts, neglect and greed, legal representative. Jovan Rajic told the crowd from a stage. That is why we are all. here, to require obligation and justice.

Under an original plan, the protesters were supposed to hand. their needs for the resignations of Prime Minister Milos. Vucevic and Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric to President Aleksandar. Vucic.

But the presidential palace was locked and cordoned off by. police, so they stated they would hand the demands, consisting of the. publishing of secret agreements on the train station. reconstruction, to the parliament.

Unless their demands have actually been fulfilled, the opposition MPs will. require a parliament no-confidence vote in the federal government, they. said.

Protesters were bring banners reading Corruption kills. and Crime, not Disaster.

This is the least we might and needed to provide for the criminal offense that. was devoted in Novi Sad, said Miroslav Sarenac, 69.

Serbia's opposition politicians, activists and rights groups. accuse authorities faithful to Vucic and his Serbian Progressive. Party of rampant corruption, ties to organised criminal offense, nepotism. and excessive bureaucracy.

Vucic and his allies reject such claims.

The station in Novi Sad was renovated in 2021 and 2022. Other small work continued until July this year.
