The Russian Arctic LNG 2 plant restarts operation'slowly.'

Sources and satellite images on Tuesday showed that the Arctic LNG 2 plant in Russia, which is under U.S. sanctions, had resumed processing natural gas at a slow rate. However, it still hasn't delivered its first cargo.

Arctic LNG 2 was to be a major LNG plant in Russia, with a production of 19,8 million tons of LNG per year. However, Western sanctions over Russia’s war against Ukraine have hampered its prospects, and the company has also struggled to market seaborne gas.

Novatek didn't immediately respond to an inquiry for a comment.

Sources said that Arctic LNG 2’s first production train has been closed since October 11 because the project had not been able to sell any cargo due to the sanctions.

On Tuesday, two industry sources confirmed that the plant had gradually resumed its processing.

One source said that production was slow because Russia still hoped for clarification from U.S. president Donald Trump on his stance regarding the sanctions.

Sources claim that Novatek is working with lobbyists to try to repair relations between the United States and Canada after Washington imposed sanctions against the Arctic LNG 2 Project.

Russia's businessmen and officials have been cautiously hopeful about the prospect of sanctions being eased after Trump assumed office for the second consecutive time in January, and his perceived warming towards President Vladimir Putin.

Satellite images from Planet Lab show Arctic LNG 2 flaring gas on 30 March, while the picture taken on 22 March did not show any flaring.

Novatek started liquefied gas production in Arctic LNG 2’s first train, in December 2023. However, the company has fallen behind schedule with the supply of super-cooled LNG due to the shortage of ice class gas carriers and sanctions.
